Working at the "Digital Garage"

Studying in another city often necessarily means you have to earn money and that’s why I had to look for a job as I moved to Bremen.

At the moment I am working as a student assistant at the local radio station called Radio Bremen.
The editorial team I’m working in is called "Digital Garage". As the name might tell our field of investigation is the digital sphere. We observe the internet, investigate in social media topics and web news in general. Our product is a TV show called "wochenwebschau", where the appropriate English translation would be “weekly web show”.

In the following I want to introduce you to my work at wochenwebschau:
At the beginning of the week, mainly on Monday and Tuesday, my task is to do research with my colleagues. We are always looking for exciting stories about people, trending hashtags on Twitter, success stories on Instagram or interesting novelties in the gaming scene. We have an editorial meeting every day where we discuss the topics we found on the internet. If everybody is amused, fascinated, shocked or irritated by a certain topic that’s a sign for keeping it in mind.
Wednesdays are always days that are quite busy: As our main production day is Thursday, a lot of the TV reports have to be ready on Wednesday evening, so that only the moderation has to be shot on Thursday. As our editorial team is rather small, all of our reporters and journalists are responsible for their clips. We do not need a camera team because nearly every clip that is part of our show is rather Skype interview material or a compilation of internet sites. Working on a Wednesday for me means: Writing a newsletter with all the chosen news of the week and distributing it to several German broadcasting stations. For writing an interesting newsletter it’s very important to know about the reporter’s video clip as well as exchanging information with the managing editor.

The most interesting and stressful day of the editorial week is Thursday. Everything has to be shot and edited by 7 pm because the show is broadcasted on Thursday evening. The student’s tasks are mainly linked to distribution and promotion. As we are a TV show about web news of all kind our main platforms of interaction are Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. And therefore my work is mainly based on social media marketing and promotion. As student assistants we are in charge of the show’s Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Instagram profile management. Of course the managing editor always is in touch with the students in order to avoid juridical and ethical problems.
Our show is a German one, so maybe you won’t undertand it. But nevertheless you can have a look at our latest show in order to get an idea of our production, our screenplay and graphic design. I’ll also link you the English version of a clip about the tragical plane crash of the germanwings airplane nearly four weeks ago:

Thanks for your attention,

Julia from Bremen
